Top Essential Oil Tips to beat Exam Stress & improve Focus

Exam stress can be overwhelming particularly for a youngster. The pressure to be prepared and study hard, coupled with the expectation for them to do well can bring about feelings of anxiety. Nervous stress or tension is the body’s natural response to something which is deemed threatening, challenging or even exhilarating. Some students respond well to the extra pressure which helps them to knuckle down and focus, others who may usually sail through their academic studies can simply crumble with exam stress.

Symptoms of stress can include disrupted sleep, lethargy, forgetfulness, irritability, migraines/headaches, loss of appetite and muscle aches to name but a few. Most notably are the effects on the body’s immune function making a person suffering from stress more susceptible to falling ill – all in all a huge hindrance when you need to be at the top of your game.
Here are a few helpful tips on how Essential Oils can help with revision and the dreaded exam.
Revision Aid.
It’s difficult to ingest information when you’re unable to clear the mental fog, so inhaling some clean, fresh scented oils will help to clarify the mind. Whilst you’re knuckling down with your head in the books you could keep an Oil Burner or Vaporiser simmering away with a pungent blend of Lemon and Peppermint Essential Oils. These stimulating, top note oils will keep you refreshed and uplifted mentally and emotionally.
Mental Fatigue.
Stress and an over-worked mind will struggle to retain all of the information being added. Rosemary has long been referred to as “the oil of Remembrance” – great for strengthening the memory. Just 3 drops blended in 10ml of Grapeseed Carrier Oil with 2 drops of mentally-enlivening Grapefruit Essential Oil; rubbed around the shoulders, neck and just into the hairline will help to overcome mental fatigue.
Mental Wind Down.
Regular breaks are a must and there’s no better way to wind down than with a bath. Just 3 drops of Mandarin for its tonic action and 3 of anxiety-busting Ylang ylang in a bath will help cleanse the mind and soothe the senses.
Just before the Exam.
Before the exam help to stave off panic with a handy Rollerball filled with 10ml of Grapeseed Oil blended with 5 drops of Bergamot to ease anxiety and 6 drops of Sandalwood to stay grounded. This soothing blend will restore calm but still keep you feeling energetic.
During the Exam.
Staying focussed during the exam will help maintain clear thinking, whilst the mind rattles through the memory bank to find all that learned knowledge. Just 2 drops of Sweet Basil to help with alertness and 3 of Myrtle to encourage positivity; applied to a cotton ball and pushed just under the collar will provide a subtle scent to help sustain concentration until the bitter end.
Just a Note: Many of the Essential Oils recommended are cephalic oils which means they are stimulating to the mind. Over use could result in headaches or sleep disruption. They must be used with caution. Choose just one or two of these blend options to work with during a 24 hour period.
